ADHD and the Theta Chamber: What Parents Want to Know

If you're a parent reading about the Theta Chamber and ADHD, you probably have two questions: can it help, and is it safe for my child?
The short answer is that the Theta Chamber is a gentle, drug-free way to support focus and calm, and it works alongside your child's current care, not in place of it.
October is ADHD Awareness Month, so it felt like the right time to answer those questions fully.
In this world where incidence of ADHD in children has grown many-fold, this is becoming a big note of concern.
What is the Theta Chamber?
The Theta Chamber is a pod you lie down in that slowly rotates while light, sound, a gentle microcurrent, vibration, and a low-intensity PEMF mat work together to guide the brain into a calmer state. Once it gets up to speed, it feels like floating. Each session is 30 minutes. I explain each part in detail in What Is a Theta Chamber?
How is ADHD connected to the nervous system?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, and it's diagnosed by a doctor or psychologist. But as a nurse and energy practitioner, I also look at it through the lens of the nervous system.
You've probably heard of the fight, flight, or freeze response. It's the body's built-in alarm system. When it senses a threat, it floods us with energy to fight back, run, or shut down. In a regulated nervous system, that alarm switches off once the danger passes.
I often liken ADHD to living partway in "flight." The restlessness, the fidgeting, the jumping from one thought to the next, the trouble sitting still or settling into sleep. It can look a lot like a body that's always half-ready to run. When the nervous system is stuck in that state, focus and calm are hard to reach, no matter how hard a child or adult tries.
Research backs up part of this picture. A 2019 meta-analysis of 13 studies found that people with ADHD had lower heart rate variability, a marker of how well the calming side of the nervous system is working (Robe et al., 2019). The difference was small, but it points to a nervous system that has a harder time shifting out of high alert.
How does the Theta Chamber help calm that response?
The Theta Chamber is designed to help calm the nervous system's alarm response. The slow rotation, the soft light, the sound you hear and feel, the gentle microcurrent, and the PEMF mat all send the body the same steady message: you're safe, you can settle. For a nervous system stuck in flight, that can be a real relief. You can read more about why safety comes first in Before the Body Can Heal, It Needs to Feel Safe.
My chamber has more than 30 built-in programs across three categories: addictions, emotional, and physical. For ADHD, the programs that often fit best include:
ADD/ADHD: a program designed specifically for attention and hyperactivity
Reduce Stress: for calming an overactive stress response
Anxiety: since anxiety so often travels with ADHD
Insomnia: for kids and adults whose busy brains won't settle at night
Memory Enhancement, Focus, Concentration: for mental sharpness and staying on task
I can also choose the brainwave state directly: theta or alpha for calm and emotional regulation, beta or gamma for focus and alertness. We'll decide on the right starting point together.
What have families noticed?
One mom brought her 14-year-old son for the 28-day program. He was struggling to connect what he saw with what he heard, and he wasn't reading yet. Here's what she shared:
"After the second session we began to notice positive changes. He has made progress and began reading his first words and for the first time was able to hear and distinguish the sounds. I also noticed he was happier, calmer, going outside more often and choosing less screen time. Amazing benefits. Stacy is patient and calm, encouraging any age to be comfortable with getting into the theta chamber!" (Susan J.)
And from an adult who did 28 days:
"I have been doing the Theta Chamber for 28 days and it has been a game changer on my patience and focus." (Dr. Tiffany Kristensen, DTCM, owner of Vibe Acupuncture & Holistic Healing Center, where EllieMetanoia is located)
Every brain is different, and individual results vary.
What does the research say about ADHD?
I'll be honest here, because parents deserve that. There aren't studies on the Theta Chamber and ADHD specifically. There is research on some of the tools it combines. A 2019 meta-analysis of 22 studies found binaural beats had a medium overall effect on attention-related thinking skills, anxiety, and pain (Garcia-Argibay et al., 2019). A 2022 meta-analysis found CES reduced anxiety, which often travels with ADHD (Chou et al., 2022).
That's promising, but it's not the same as proof for ADHD. I'd rather you know that going in.
Does my child need to stop their ADHD medication?
No. Please don't change any medication without talking to your child's doctor. The Theta Chamber doesn't interfere with most medications, and I see it as one more support alongside the care your family already has. Tell me about all medications and diagnoses during the consultation.
Is the Theta Chamber safe for kids?
The Theta Chamber is non-invasive, and kids stay fully clothed. There's no minimum age. What matters is that your child can lie still for 30 minutes while wearing headphones and light goggles, which deliver the sound and light parts of the session. If you're not sure your child can do that yet, we can talk it through in a free consultation. Check with your child's doctor first if your child has a history of seizures triggered by light, strong light sensitivity, or an implanted electronic device.
How many sessions?
A simple way to decide: on a scale of 1 to 10, how much is this affecting daily life?
If it's an 8 or higher, the 28-Day Protocol is designed for lasting change in how the brain is wired. For lighter needs, the 6- and 12-session packages are a good start.
As of October 2026, a single session is $105, 6 sessions are $579, 12 sessions are $1,099, and the 28-Day Protocol is $1,899. Cash payments get 5% off.
Talk it through first
If you're wondering whether this is right for your child or for yourself, book a free consultation. We'll talk through what's going on and decide together whether the Theta Chamber is a fit.
