Why Does My Body Feel Stuck in Stress Mode?

Your body can feel stuck in stress mode when your stress response turns on and never gets a clear signal that the danger has passed. Instead of rising and falling the way it's designed to, it stays switched on. Over time, you may feel tense, on edge, worn out, or strangely numb, even on days when nothing is going wrong. Your body isn't broken. It's still trying to protect you.
With the holidays coming, a lot of us are about to add more to our plates. This is a good moment to notice how your body is really doing.
What does it mean to be "stuck" in stress mode?
Your stress response is meant to work like a wave. Something stressful happens, your heart speeds up, stress hormones rise, and your body gets ready to act. Then the moment passes, and everything settles back down.
When stress keeps coming, that wave never fully falls. Mayo Clinic describes it this way: when stressors are always present, the fight-or-flight reaction "stays turned on" (Mayo Clinic). Your body starts treating high alert as normal.
What are the signs my body is stuck in stress mode?
Chronic stress shows up in the body as much as in the mind. You might notice:
Tight shoulders, neck, or jaw that never seem to let go
Headaches or muscle aches
Stomach trouble, like bloating, cramping, or changes in appetite
Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
Shallow breathing, or forgetting to breathe deeply at all
Feeling irritable, short-tempered, or easily startled
Trouble focusing or remembering things
Catching every bug that goes around
Feeling flat, numb, or checked out
Mayo Clinic lists many of these, including digestive problems, muscle tension, headaches, sleep problems, and memory and focus problems, as effects of long-term stress.
Can stress make you feel numb instead of anxious?
Yes. Most people know about fight and flight, but there's a third response: freeze. When the body feels overwhelmed and can't fight or escape, it may shut down to protect itself.
Freeze can look like exhaustion, procrastination, scrolling for hours, feeling disconnected from your body, or not being able to make yourself start things you care about. From the outside, it can look like laziness. On the inside, it often feels like being stuck in mud. It's simply another way the stress response can get stuck.
Why won't my body come out of stress mode?
Here are a few of the most common reasons:
The stress never stops. Work pressure, caregiving, money worries, health concerns, or a hard relationship can keep the alarm ringing day after day.
The stress cycle never finishes. Your body was built to move after stress, to run, shake, cry, or breathe it off. When we sit still and push through instead, the stress chemistry has nowhere to go.
Old emotions are still holding on. Painful experiences from years ago can leave your body braced for danger. In Emotion Code, we'd call these trapped emotions. You can read more in What's Haunting You?
Subconscious beliefs keep you on guard. Beliefs like "I'm not safe," "I have to hold it all together," or "If I rest, something bad will happen" can keep your nervous system working overtime without you realizing it.
As a nurse, I also want you to rule out physical causes. Thyroid problems, anemia, blood sugar swings, hormone changes, sleep apnea, and medication side effects can all feel like stress. Chest pain, a racing heart that won't settle, or thoughts of harming yourself need medical help right away. If you're in crisis, call or text 988.
What can I do at home to help my body reset?
Small signals of safety, repeated often, help your body remember how to come down from high alert:
Finish the stress cycle. Take a brisk walk, dance in the kitchen, or shake out your arms and legs for a minute after a hard moment.
Lengthen your exhale. Breathe in for four counts and out for six. I share more about breathing in Why Can't I Relax Even When I'm Exhausted?
Hum. Humming gently vibrates your chest and throat and is an easy way to slow down. Sound has a real effect on the nervous system, which I explain in How Do Sound Waves Affect the Body?
Have a good cry. Tears are one of the body's natural ways to release built-up stress.
Protect one quiet hour. Before the holiday rush, choose one hour a week that belongs only to you.
How can EllieMetanoia help my body get unstuck?
When a body has been on high alert for months or years, it sometimes needs more support to find its way back. At my center in The Woodlands, I work on stress from two directions: calming the nervous system directly, and releasing what's keeping it on guard.
To calm the nervous system:
The Theta Chamber: slow rotation that feels like floating, plus light, sound, vibration, and a PEMF mat. It's designed to guide your brain toward calmer theta and alpha states and has built-in programs for Reduce Stress and Anxiety.
The Negative Ion/Rife/Scalar Suite: you sit back and rest while plasma light frequencies and negative ion rain support deep relaxation. Read more in Who Was Dr. Royal Rife?
High Intensity PEMF: strong electromagnetic pulses designed to support circulation, cellular energy, and recovery. It's also listed on Vibe's High Intensity PEMF page.
To release what's keeping you on guard:
Emotion Code and Body Code: finds and releases trapped emotions your body is still holding. Sessions work in person, on Zoom, or by phone.
Belief Coding: finds the subconscious beliefs keeping you in protection mode and rewires them.
Dr. Tiffany Kristensen, DACM, owner of Vibe Acupuncture & Holistic Healing, where my center is located, shared:
"I have been doing the Theta Chamber for 28 days and it has been a game changer on my patience and focus. Another one of my favorite modalities is the high intensity PEMF. I have seen a huge improvement in my energy and inflammation. Thank you Stacy for providing these wonderful modalities!" (Dr. Tiffany Kristensen, DACM)
And after High Intensity PEMF, Jennifer said:
"I felt calm but energized and slept really well." (Jennifer F.)
