Who Was Dr. Royal Rife, and What Is a Rife Frequency?

Royal Raymond Rife (1888 to 1971) was an American inventor and researcher from San Diego who believed every living organism has its own frequency, and that the right frequency could change it. A "Rife frequency" is a specific frequency based on that idea. Nearly a hundred years later, his work still inspires frequency wellness technology, including the plasma light tubes in the Negative Ion/Rife/Scalar Suite at my center in The Woodlands.
Who was Royal Rife?
Rife was born in Elkhorn, Nebraska, in 1888 and spent most of his working life in San Diego, California. He was largely self-taught, with a rare gift for optics, mechanics, and building instruments.
In the 1920s and 1930s, he designed some of the most advanced optical microscopes of his time. He said they could magnify living organisms many thousands of times, and he filmed microorganisms with movie cameras so he could watch them while they were still alive. That was groundbreaking for the era. The Smithsonian Institution described one of his microscopes in its 1944 annual report (Wikipedia: Royal Rife).
Rife didn't work alone. In 1931, he co-authored a paper with Dr. Arthur Kendall, a bacteriologist at Northwestern University, on what they observed under his microscope. Several respected physicians in Southern California followed his research closely, and for a time, there was real excitement about where it might lead.
What is a Rife frequency?
Rife's central idea was something he called the "mortal oscillatory rate." He believed each type of microorganism vibrates at its own frequency, and that sending energy at that exact matching frequency could cause it to break apart, while leaving healthy tissue alone.
Think of an opera singer who hits just the right note and shatters a wine glass. The glass breaks because the note matches its natural frequency. That's a real principle of physics called resonance, and it's the heart of Rife's work. Over the decades, practitioners have built lists of specific frequencies, often called Rife frequencies, matched to different organisms and systems of the body.
If you're new to the idea of frequency, What Is Frequency Medicine? is a good place to start.
What happened to Rife's research?
This is where the story gets interesting. After that early excitement in the 1930s, Rife's research faded from view. His equipment was never carried forward by mainstream medicine, and his ideas were largely dismissed.
Many people believe his work deserved far more attention than it received. In his 1987 book The Cancer Cure That Worked, author Barry Lynes tells Rife's story from that point of view and argues that promising research was set aside too soon. The book helped spark a revival of interest in Rife that continues today. You'll find strong opinions on every side, and I'd encourage you to read the history and decide for yourself.
What I can tell you is that Rife's core insight, that the body responds to frequency, is something modern science now measures every day. Your heart and brain run on electrical rhythms, and technologies like PEMF and cranial electrotherapy stimulation have decades of published research behind them. Rife was asking questions about frequency long before most of the world was ready to listen.
How do I use Rife principles at EllieMetanoia?
Rife frequency principles are part of the Negative Ion/Rife/Scalar Suite, which I lovingly call "the RAIN." It combines three technologies at once:
Acoustic light wave technology: based on more than 90 years of Rife frequency research. Five large plasma tubes deliver frequencies from 300,000 up to 1,500,000 Hz, converting sound frequencies into light and producing 11 octaves of sideband frequencies.
Scalar wave technology: paired waves designed to amplify the effects of the other frequencies.
Negative ion rain: a focused stream of negative ions from above each chair, with a grounding mat under your feet.
The Suite is designed to support:
ATP production, the energy your cells run on
Healthy blood flow and cellular respiration
Blood alkalization
Endocrine system balance
A calmer mental state and deep relaxation
Stress relief
It's the only suite of its kind I know of in the Houston area. Very few of these systems exist, which is a big part of why I wanted to bring one to The Woodlands.
What have I noticed with the Suite?
Two things stand out to me most. The first is energy. People often walk out with noticeably more energy than they had when they walked in. The second is the nervous system. I see bodies that arrived tense and wired settle into a much calmer, more relaxed state.
Rob, who has used both the Suite and the Theta Chamber, shared:
"Life gets busy, and sometimes your body just needs a real reset. I've been to see Stacy multiple times now, and the changes build with each session. From mental clarity and energy to relaxation and sleep, the Theta Chamber and the RAIN deliver across the board." (Rob H.)
Individual results vary.
What does a session feel like?
You sit back in a comfortable chair while the plasma tubes glow around you and the negative ion "rain" falls from above. There's nothing to do but rest and receive. Sessions usually last 30 to 45 minutes.
Up to four people can share a session, so you can bring your spouse, a friend, or your family and experience it together.
How much does the Negative Ion/Rife/Scalar Suite cost?
As of November 2026:
Single session: $63
10 sessions: $400
1 month unlimited: $350 (no contract)
3 months unlimited: $750
Cash payments get 5% off.
If you're feeling run down or stretched thin, a month of unlimited sessions lets you come in as often as your body needs.
Ready to experience Rife's legacy for yourself?
Rife spent his life believing the body responds to the right frequency. Sitting in the Suite is the best way to understand what he was reaching for. Book a free consultation, and I'll answer your questions and help you decide if the RAIN is a good fit for you.
