Theta, Alpha, Beta, or Gamma: Choosing Your Brainwave State
Updated: Oct 5

Brainwaves are the rhythms of electrical activity in your brain, measured in hertz (Hz), or cycles per second. Different rhythms go with different states of mind, from deep rest to sharp focus. My Theta Chamber in The Woodlands can guide the brain toward four of them: theta, alpha, beta, and gamma.
This Saturday, October 10, is World Mental Health Day, and a lot of what I do in the chamber comes down to helping a stressed brain find a different gear.
What are brainwaves?
Your brain's cells communicate with tiny electrical signals. When large groups of them fire together, they create rhythms that can be measured on an EEG. Your brain produces all of these rhythms all day, but one usually leads depending on what you're doing. Falling asleep, daydreaming, driving in traffic, and solving a hard problem each have a different pattern.
What does each brainwave state do?
Theta (about 4 to 8 Hz): the drowsy space just before sleep, deep meditation, and the state where the brain is most open to change
Alpha (about 8 to 12 Hz): calm, relaxed alertness, like sitting on a porch with nowhere to be
Beta (about 12 to 30 Hz): active thinking, focus, and problem-solving (too much can feel like stress and racing thoughts)
Gamma (30 Hz and up): higher-level processing, memory, and pulling information together
There's no good or bad brainwave. Trouble starts when the brain gets stuck in one gear. A lot of people today live in high beta: wired, anxious, and unable to switch off. Others feel foggy and can't lock in when they need to.
How does the Theta Chamber guide brainwaves?
The chamber combines several gentle inputs at the same rhythm: binaural beats, patterned light, vibroacoustic sound, a microcurrent through ear clips, a low-intensity PEMF mat, and slow rotation that feels like floating. The brain tends to fall in step with steady rhythmic input, a process called entrainment. I cover each piece in What Is a Theta Chamber?
Which brainwave state is right for me?
We choose together based on what you need that day. My chamber also has more than 30 built-in programs, from Anxiety and Reduce Stress to Insomnia and Memory Enhancement, Focus, Concentration, plus a custom frequency setting. That lets me match each session to what you came in for.
Theta if you're anxious, carrying a lot emotionally, working through addiction or trauma, or wanting deep rest
Alpha if you want calm without drifting off, or you're winding down stress
Beta if you need help with focus, motivation, or mental energy
Gamma if you want support for memory and mental sharpness
As someone who personally struggles with attention and memory, Gamma is my personal favorite. And I LOVE that I can tailor my Theta Chamber session to my personal needs.
What does the research say about gamma?
Gamma has drawn a lot of attention. In studies on mice, 40 Hz light and sound stimulation reduced Alzheimer's-related plaque buildup and improved memory. Early human pilot studies show it's safe and well tolerated, but a 2024 review in eLife notes that the results haven't yet been shown to carry over to people in the same way (Ichim et al., 2024). It's an exciting area, and still an early one. My chamber's custom frequency setting lets me run a 40 Hz gamma session for anyone curious about it.
For theta and alpha, a 2019 meta-analysis of 22 studies found that binaural beats had a medium overall effect on anxiety, pain, and thinking skills (Garcia-Argibay et al., 2019).
Try a session
A 30-minute Theta Chamber session is $105 as of October 2026, with 6-session, 12-session, and 28-day options too. Book a free consultation and we'll pick the brainwave state that fits where you are right now.
