What's Haunting You? Old Fears and Trapped Emotions

Halloween is the one night a year we go looking for a scare. But for many people, what really haunts them is an old fear, a painful memory, or an emotion they never got to fully feel. Those experiences can stay with us long after the moment has passed, quietly shaping how we react, love, and live.

The good news is that what's been haunting you doesn't have to stay.

How can an old fear still affect me today?

Your brain is built to remember danger so it can protect you. When something frightening or painful happens, especially when you're young, your nervous system files it away as a warning. Years later, a tone of voice, a smell, a type of situation, or even a feeling in your body can set off that old alarm, even though you're safe now.

In Emotion Code, we'd call the emotional charge from that moment a trapped emotion. It's energy from the past that never fully released, and it can keep pulling on you in the present. I explain this more in What Is Emotion Code?

What are the signs something from the past is still haunting you?

You might notice:

  • Reactions that feel bigger than the situation in front of you

  • Fears you can't explain, or ones you know aren't logical

  • Avoiding certain people, places, or conversations without quite knowing why

  • Feeling on edge, braced, or waiting for something bad to happen

  • Patterns in relationships or work that keep repeating

  • Physical tension, tightness, or discomfort that shows up with stress

None of these mean something is wrong with you. They're signs your body is still trying to protect you from something that already happened.

What kinds of emotions get trapped?

Fear is a big one, but it's rarely alone. Trapped emotions often include worry, dread, panic, grief, anger, shame, guilt, and feeling unworthy or abandoned. Sometimes the original event was large, like a loss or trauma. Often it was small and quiet, like years of feeling unseen.

When enough painful emotions build up around the heart, Emotion Code calls it a Heart Wall. You can read about that in The Heart Wall: Why You Might Feel Walled Off From the People You Love.

How can I release what's been haunting me?

At EllieMetanoia, I have several gentle ways to help:

  • Emotion Code and Body Code: I muscle test by proxy to find specific trapped emotions, including fear, and release them by swiping over the Governing Meridian. You don't have to relive or retell the memory. Sessions work in person, on Zoom, or by phone.

  • Belief Coding: finds the early experience behind a fear or limiting belief and rewires it. It's designed to help with fears, phobias, and anxiety that feel impossible to shake.

  • The Theta Chamber: has a built-in Anger/Fear program, along with Anxiety and Reduce Stress, designed to help calm an overactive alarm system.

Is this the same as trauma therapy?

No. Emotion Code, Belief Coding, and the Theta Chamber are designed to support you, and they can be a wonderful complement to counseling. If you're living with PTSD or serious trauma, please keep working with a licensed mental health professional. If you're in crisis, call or text 988 any time.

What can I do tonight?

Try this simple check-in. Sit quietly, put one hand on your heart, and ask yourself: "What am I still afraid of?" Don't force an answer. Just notice what comes up, whether it's a memory, a feeling, or a sensation in your body. Naming it is often the first step toward letting it go.
